Chuck Assay illustrates very clearly and succinctly the conservative mindset in this cartoon. While the fat liberal recognizes that he is part of a national epidemic, the fat conservative is making decisions like he feels they should be made: emotionally and with plenty of “I.” (“Who cares if there’s HFCS in everything and it’s making us all sick and dumb and also killing us? You can’t tell me what not to eat, or give nutritional guidance or ensure healthy lunches for kids! Who cares if gays want the right to marry? I’m not gay, and I think it’s nasty! Make it illegal!”) Then he uses that same marvelous navel-gazing to assume that’s how everyone makes decisions: “Academia and scientific experts must just be stupid and relying on their own agendas! That’s why they have a different opinion than mine! My opinion is just as valid!”
Like a fat man who can’t see his own dick beneath his paunch, the conservative can’t see beyond himself. A good cartoon.
